These organizations have Lawyers who may offer free legal advice and representation to people with low income who have legal problems. For some problems, they may send you to another organization offering legal aid services or a volunteer lawyer. 

 

  1. Kituo Cha Sheria

Legal Assistance

Kituo Cha Sheria is a human rights non-governmental organization committed to helping the disadvantaged and poor people who cannot afford the cost of legal services.  It was founded on 9th July 1973 as Kituo Cha Mashauri and has over 50 years of understanding of the justice challenges affecting marginalized groups in Kenya. KITUO’s mission is to empower the poor and marginalized people to effectively access justice and enjoy their human rights in Kenya.

  1. National Legal Aid Service (NLAS) 

Legal Assistance | Legal Representation

The Kenya Government through the office of the Attorney General established the National Legal Aid Service (NLAS) with the mandate of providing legal advice and representation mainly to the poor, marginalized and vulnerable in Kenyan society.

Kenyan nationals as well as Refugees can seek legal assistance from these offices by filling an application to receive a Legal Aid Services Form that can be downloaded online for free. Physical NLAS forms can be picked from their offices on Mondays to Fridays between 8:00am and 4:00pm. NLAS has offices in Nairobi, Kisumu, Mombasa Nakuru and Eldoret.

  1. CLEAR Kenya

Legal Assistance | Legal Representation | Legal Education

CLEAR Kenya, Christian Legal Education Aid and Research, is a charity set up in 1999 by the Kenya Christian Lawyers’ Fellowship to help ensure that even the poorest and most disadvantaged in Kenyan Society have access to justice.

CLEAR does this by; providing free legal advice and representation; training prisoners on how to represent themselves effectively in court; educating school children in their basic legal and human rights; and by supporting a number of public interest cases to encourage law reform. CLEAR is also helping to bring about formal mediation of family disputes as a form of Alternative Dispute Resolution.

CLEAR has offices in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu and Eldoret, and relies on few permanent staff, volunteer lawyers, trainee lawyers and law students.

  1. Refugee Consortium of Kenya (RCK)

Refugee Consortium of Kenya is a national non-governmental organization that was established in 1998 to promote and protect the rights and dignity of refugees, asylum seekers, IDPs (Internally Displaced Persons) and other forced migrants in Kenya and the wider East African region. Also Known as Haki House, RCK was formed as a response to a progressively complicated and worsening refugee situation in Kenya and the region.

RCK’s core mandate is to: provide legal aid services and psycho-social counseling to refugees and other forced migrants; and to raise awareness regarding the plight and rights of these vulnerable groups through research and information dissemination.

Over the years, RCK mandate has developed to address the protection needs of other forced migrants, including the internally displaced persons, victims of trafficking, stateless persons and other persons of concern.
